A Day In the Future

by @Laura Ubelhor I was pleased to find the topic this month for COMMON Eye on the i was artificial intelligence (AI). Being involved in IT for many years, as a hobby, I’m always researching new technology and continue to see many brilliant minds at force in the world of AI. COMMON members collectively have a lot of potential to impact AI advancements. COMMON provides a platform to learn and collectively pool IT talent. Let’s embrace and race to what can be. Now let’s imagine sometime in the not so distant future. This morning I woke up feeling energized. I started my day off with my quick morning run. This helps me to get the recommended exercise ...

By @Amy Blank Starting a technical project involving artificial intelligence (AI) is not different than any other project - It starts from the business. What is the business problem or opportunity the project will address? For COMMON, looking at starting a project involving AI meant starting with strategic planning. Once a year the COMMON board spends a weekend in a hotel conference room focused on how to continue the mission of enhancing the careers of our members. In 2019, the board took a different approach to strategic planning by partnering with IBM in Austin, TX for a Design Thinking session dedicated to the strategic mission ...

With around 1.77 billion websites worldwide, it is important to make your website stand out. Everyone is aiming to have their website rank in the top results, so you need to make sure that your website meets the requirements to outrank others. One of the most important ways to get a top rank is through relevant and appropriate SEO terms. Using the correct keyword and title length might make your site the optimal search result. However, ranking first is less important than having a great-looking website that is easy to use. Getting customers to your site is only the first step. Your site needs to be engaging enough to keep them there. Here are ...

As the novel coronavirus has reminded us, preventing a pandemic is a race between the spread of the disease and efforts to develop an effective vaccine. Even a disease such as the one that is now ravaging parts of China, with about a two percent fatality rate, could potentially kill millions if not contained in time. Think about the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 20 million people worldwide before it burned itself out. ZME Science suggests that AI will play an increasing role in identifying and tracking the progress of diseases such as coronavirus, the better to contain the spread while researchers create a vaccine. This would work by having public health ...

by @Gordon Leary AI, or Artificial Intelligence , is not that scary machine that you saw in that movie last night. AI uses algorithms and data to solve problems , or find answers . Through continued use of these algorithms, we amass more data, and make our machines smarter, and deliver better business results . AI is used in many aspects of our lives today – from search engines to recommendation engines to digital assistants, to weather forecasting – AI is part of our lives, and it is now even more accessible for businesses than ever before AI has many forms, of which machine learning is what we are most familiar with today. Machine learning consists of ...

The desktop computer industry is giving way to more convenient ways of computing — mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Convenience is a good thing but generally, it can give way to security caveats. Whether the business or nonbusiness user takes advantage of the devices, there are some points to keep in mind when using them. Complacency tends to sneak in for the duration of mobile device use, depending on the general usage. Another more common danger is that mobile devices can be lost or stolen relatively easy. It’s a computer hacker’s pastime to set up WiFi access points — requiring no password — in order to obtain a connection to a victim’s ...

When the internet became more user-friendly in the mid to late 90’s, it opened the door to various security caveats — a criminal’s honeypot. The world connected via routers, servers, and computers is now a primary target for those looking to exploit data theft — a craft by which well-informed and expert computers users utilize a combination of various skills, knowledge, and tools to steal and/or compromise data stored on computers. Stolen data is used for a variety of purposes such as identity theft, political gain, financial crimes, and sometimes for merely stroking the ego. Footprinting , a term used by the IT industry to define methods ...

As a young i professional, I have found that attending conferences is both a daunting and exhilarating experience. You usually feel more exhilaration from all the learning than you do daunted by the experience of trying to find sessions that will be a challenge for you while also at a level where you can understand the concepts that were thrown at you. Unfortunately, you have to figure out which sessions to take before you can feel the exhilaration of education. I am hoping to ease a little bit of that stress and point out several sessions that would be good to attend if you are just starting your career or are new to the platform. All speakers’ work ...

Artificial intelligence has been used in many applications, ranging from finance to healthcare. According to Geek.Com . AI has entered the realm of sports. AI has already performed analyses of athletic performance and has even been used in sports nutrition. However, artificial intelligence has been used to create an entirely new sport called Speedgate AKQA used data from 400 popular sports and an algorithm to create 10 possible outdoor pastimes. After field-testing the results, Speedgate made the cut. Speed gate is played on a field with two “gates” on either end and a circle in the middle. Two teams of six people, three forwards and three defenders, ...

President’s Corner

For the past week, I have been in Berlin, Germany, participating in the 2019 COMMON Europe Congress (CEC). For me, it was truly one of the hottest conferences I have attended in some time, with temperatures soaring into the 90’s. The venue was a hotel in the heart of Berlin with a spectacular 7-story high fish tank in the middle of the hotel atrium, complete with many varieties of fish and plant life with an elevator down the center for viewing. As I am always interested in how other engineers patch things together with baling wire and paperclips, I was fascinated that they had applied duct tape to seal said aquarium in the hotel lobby and not a drop of water ...

The duration that a business’ operations are interrupted at any given time by various complications and unforeseen circumstances will be determined by how prepared the business is in dealing with them. Some unforeseen causes of downtime in small and medium-sized businesses include but are not limited to fire, floods, illegal computer hacking, earthquakes, terrorism, and broken equipment. Whatever the case, the IT industry sets standards for how to prepare for business downtime in the wake of the disturbances. Any business serious about preparing for downtime and disasters should have what’s called a DRP — Disaster Recovery Plan . The following is a basic ...

Recently, the Verge sat down with Dr. Eric Topol , who recently published a book entitled “Deep Medicine,” which examines how artificial intelligence will change healthcare. Dr. Topol presented the following insights: Artificial intelligence will not replace doctors. Patients will still appreciate the human touch when it comes to getting health care. Also, AI can have glitches or get hacked, so human doctors will have to check the Ai’s diagnosis, sort of like seeking a second opinion in the same office. AI will be able to solve a long-standing problem that doctors face, which is the time they must spend analyzing data from patients, especially from new ...

Artificial intelligence promises to radically transform the economy, perhaps faster than any technological revolution in history. According to a report from the McKinsey Global Institute , AI could add $13 trillion to global wealth by 2030, which is equivalent to an additional 1.2 percent of growth per year. However, this brings up an important question: how should organizations integrate artificial intelligence technology into their operations? One possible solution is to decentralize the process by allowing data to be analyzed by each individual machine or on a local server. This brings AI closer to the “edge”–meaning closer to the source of the data, ...
