What the heck are ‘RiPs’?The RiPs are the ‘Retired i Professionals’—a group of professionals who have trimmed back their day to day involvement at producing code and running system i shops but still are eager to stay active in the i community. They do so by teaching classes and mentoring new members of the i community. One of these efforts takes place annually when the RiPs offer to help a new speaker learn the ropes and improve their delivery at the annual COMMON conference. COMMON is looking for Retired IBM i professionals who might be willing to help coach new speakers who want to stretch their wings and talk about system i - - sometimes within their own companies, sometimes at COMMON events. If you feel you could help in this capacity, you can send your offer to COMMON's Volunteer Excellence team: VolExcellence@common.org.Why be a RiP?Besides giving back to the Power System community by helping new speakers, why else participate? Well, as a RiP, you can earn 25% towards the cost of registration for each new speaker you mentor. You can mentor up to 2 new speakers, for a total of 50% of the registration. Also as a RiP, you would receive free COMMON membership. As they say on the TV commercials, “that’s a $150.00 value!!!” In addition, you might be able to defray additional expenses of conference attendance, since you would be eligible for the normal CC’s which speakers and lab providers can earn. When can you sign-up?Anytime. The next opportunity to serve as Rip will be the Conference in Reno. All you need to do to get started is contact COMMON's Volunteer Excellence team: VolExcellence@common.org It’s time to start planning for this annual event. Right now, there are 5 folks who are official card carrying RiP’s. An additional 6 have expressed interest, but will not be able to participate at this time. Where is the forum?A RiP’s forum has been set up on iSociety, http://isociety.common.org/forums/list/threads/?forumid=93 . Anyone wanting to post to this forum will first need to register for a free iSociety account at http://www.common.org/wgs/signup.html .
