Moving to System i servers can be a new experience for programmers familiar with mainframe, PC, or other midrange systems.  This session introduces experienced programmers to the i5/ OS programming environment. Compiling and testing programs using both the Original Program Model (OPM)
and the Integrated Language Environment (ILE) processes are discussed.

This session is presented using student-paced computer-based training. Students who complete the session early will have the opportunity to also take a session covering the Screen Design Aid (SDA).

After completing this session, attendees should be able to:
1. List the steps required to create an executable program.
2. Describe the difference between the original program model (OPM) development process and the integrated language environment (ILE) development process.
3. Access the Source Entry Utility (SEU) to create or edit a source program.
4. Compile a source program
5. Bind modules into an executable program.
6. Execute a program.
7. Describe the difference between external data and program
described data.
8. Describe how external data is created.
9. (Optional) Use SDA to create and test a display file.
