Subsystems 101

Speaker(s):
Alejandro M. Bascuas IBM Corporation

This will be an introduction to subsystems on i5/ OS for those new to System i or for those needing a refresher course. We値l start with an overview of subsystems including the properties of a subsystem description.

Next we値l compare the two default controlling subsystems, QBASE and QCTL and the different environments each starts up. Each default subsystem will be presented with time spent on those configured to handle user work (QINTER, QUSRWRK, etc.).

The next step in understanding the configuration of subsystems start with a primer on workstation, autostart, job queue, and prestart entries. The others will be mentioned and described but will be discussed more in the Advanced Subsystem presentation. During this time, we値l tie in the shipped default values of these contained in the default subsystem descriptions. Information will be provided to help members of the audience determine if the default values should be changed to meet their IT needs.

Finally we値l run through the creation of a subsystem to handle interactive work. This includes the creation of a class object and a simple routing entry. Sources of data used to start the job, such as information in a job description and user profile, will be presented. Finally we値l talk about the advantages of distributing interactive work across multiple subsystems highlighting differences between the new multi-threaded subsystem implementation in V5R4, and legacy i5/ OS releases.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Understand all aspects of a subsystem description and changes in V5R4 to subsystems.
2. Determine if default subsystems need to be changed to meet IT needs.
3. Configure multiple subsystems to distribute interactive work dynamically.
