All You Need to Know About SQL in Six Hours by Skip Marchesani

SQL has become the industry standard for moving data between platforms in a network centric computing environment, and working with data in a relational database. In today’s IT environment of mixed hardware and software platforms you have to know SQL to survive.

This workshop (including live demos) will serve as an excellent introduction to SQL on the iSeries and AS/400 for those people that may not be familiar with it, or it will be an excellent review for those that need a refresher course.

The morning part of this workshop will be spent building a firm SQL foundation. It will start with a discussion of SQL basic theory and terminology, and progress to SQL statement format and structure and the more frequently used SQL statements: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, and DROP. It will show you how to use SQL functions such as MIN, MAX, AVG, SUM, COUNT, AS, and Subselect to query and analyze data. After covering these basics, the workshop will move on to some intermediate level topics. First it will look at the SQL software support that is available in Version 5 of OS/400 and i5/OS so you can understand which part is included with OS/400 and which part is a separate licensed product. Next it will show you the groups of SQL statements used to query and work with data, to define and manage data base objects, and used for miscellaneous functions. The morning will end with a discussion of the various SQL interfaces available on the iSeries and AS/400.

The afternoon part of this workshop will take you on a detailed exploration of some more advanced SQL topics that include: Interactive SQL, the SQL Statement Processor (RUNSQLSTM command), the SQL Script Center in iSeries Navigator, Embedding SQL in a High Level Language program (RPG, COBOL, C), and Dynamic SQL. The workshop will conclude with a detailed discussion of how you can use SQL, in place of DDS and the native interface, to create and manage your database objects.

System i Access for Web by Doug Beauchene and Jason Hansen

If you are tired of maintaining software (such as System i Access for Windows) on all your users’ desktops, then you need to learn about the browser-based System i Access for Web solution. This product is installed, configured, and maintained on your System i. Then desktop users simply bring up their browsers, key in a URL address, and are ready to work with all their i5/OS resources through easy-to-use, point-and-click screens.

This workshop will begin with an overview of the features of System i Access for Web, and will be followed with instructions on how to set up this environment on your System i. We will then drill down and learn more about the powerful functions you can use. You will leave with the knowledge needed to get System i Access for Web up and running on your system.

(LAB): System i Developer Bootcamp (Day 2 of 3) by Kevin Forsythe

How do I develop applications for the System i? What’s RPG? What’s WDSC? For programmers who are new to the System i, the Developer’s BootCamp is a must! This three-day workshop will introduce the development tools and languages commonly used to create applications for the platform. Attendees will learn to define databases with DDS, automate processes with CL, interact with databases through SQL, and write complex RPG Programs. Attendees will learn basic operating system commands as well as a quick tour through system security. As key technologies for use by a developer, the client based development tools, WebSphere Development Studio Client, will be used as the basis for most discussion and demonstration. There will be a brief overview of the older tools such as PDM, SEU and SDA that are used in some development shops.

To ensure the best student learning environment, this workshop is presented as a combination of lecture, demo and hands-on labs.

The workshop will deliver the following topics:
Day One: Introduction to System i, Basic Operations and Security, Command Language, Using the Eclipse based WDSc Development Tool.

Day Two: WDSc Lab, Intro to DDS, SQL, and RPG SQL

Day Three: RPG Lab, RPG Continued, Screen Design

This session is essential for any developer new to the System i.

(LAB): IBM System i Navigator Workshop by Nick Fernholz and Arturo Gutierrez Loza

This is a workshop for System i operators, systems administrators, and other individuals who manage the System i using System i Navigator.

System i Navigator is the graphical user interface for managing your IBM System i network. It includes a suite of functions for managing one or multiple IBM System i’s at once, through a single interface. This workshop introduces you to the functions of System i Navigator. These functions include: managing jobs, messages, and printer output; user administration; working with database and file systems; real-time system monitors; fixes (PTF) management; object distribution; managing system values; utilizing the performance advisor wizard; managing System i Navigator tasks on the web; and much more!

In this workshop attendees will:

  1. Get an understanding of IBM System i Navigator concepts
  2. Perform a task in each of the functional areas listed above
  3. Gain a better understanding of ways to simplify some of your daily operations
  4. Become more familiar with management function integrated into the operating system.
(LAB): Hands on VB.Net and ASP.Net for System i Developers by Richard Schoen and Bruce Collins

This session will be a chance for System i developers to get hands on experience with
Microsoft VB.net and ASP.Net to learn how to develop Windows or Web based applications that can access System i data. Build value into your System i by showing the network guys how it can be used as a database backend for windows and web applications.
